It’s that time of the year again – time to start thinking about our resolutions for 2016. Is 2016 going to be the year where you follow through and make a real change in your life?

We hope so! Especially when it comes to your career. The end of the year is always a great time to look back and reflect on the year that was. Did you achieve your career goals this year? What could you have done better? What were some of your victories? What can you do differently in the coming year?

For those on the job hunt in 2016, here are a number of resolutions to consider to help guide your search:

1. Become a better job candidate

Putting yourself in a better position to be a star job candidate will increase your odds of landing a job in 2016:

  • Work on your resume and consider having a professional take a look
  • Work on your interview skills
  • Volunteer and add experience to your resume
  • Add a new skill, take a course, and keep up with industry news and developments

2. Become a pro at networking

The more people you know, the better odds you will have to connect with someone who could help you with your job search:

  • Connect with professionals in your industry on LinkedIn
  • Leverage social media and become an active participant online
  • Attend workshops, seminars, and networking events

3. Re-dedicate yourself to the job search

It’s common for people’s job search momentum to lose steam over time. If you still haven’t found what you are looking for, use the new year as a source of motivation to rededicate yourself:

  • Make your job search a top priority
  • Schedule time to search for jobs, network, work on your resume, and apply for positions
  • Have a plan and stick to it
  • Have someone you can go to when you get discouraged

4. Refine your career goals

Your career goals evolve each year. Every year, you have one more year of experience, new insights, and a better idea of where you want your career to go in the future:

  • Know the tasks and responsibilities you like, and don’t like
  • Define your ideal career/position
  • Be open-minded about working in new industries and exploring new career paths

5. Work with a recruiter

Many people often say, “I should work with a recruiter” but fail to follow up. Make 2016 the year where you are finally going to seek the help of a recruiter.

  • Find a recruiter who is experienced in your industry
  • Leverage their experience and connections to uncover new opportunities
  • Use their advice to become a better job candidate
