So you got the job – congratulations!

Starting a new job can be exciting, but it can also be a source of stress, especially if you are not prepared to dive into your new job full speed. There is no doubt your new company wants you to get acclimated to your new surroundings and responsibilities as quickly as possible, and we know you want to prove you are the right person for the job.

Ace New Job

So, how can you put yourself in a position to thrive in your new role?

Avoid Common Mistakes New Hires Make Their First Week on the Job

  • Not being a social butterfly – meet as many people as possible.
  • Not asking questions – now is the time to ask as many questions as you can think of.
  • Over-promising – set realistic targets, goals and objectives for yourself. We know you want to impress, but don’t try to do too much.
  • Not dressing the part – if you are not sure about the dress code, ask.

Hit the Books (or Google)

Expect some homework during your first week on the job. Whether you are expected to read the company’s code of conduct, learn internal processes, read a training manual or simply familiarize yourself with the company, don’t put it off. If you do, you could find yourself behind and leave a bad impression on your new boss.

Work on Fitting into Company Culture

Reading and hearing about company culture is one thing, but seeing how it works and being part of it is something completely different. Do your best to take an active role and work on fitting in. Accept invitations to join co-workers for lunch, sign up for an internal committee, and take part in after work activities.

Be Appreciative

During your first week, you are going to have to rely on a number of people to help you with all sorts of different things. These people often go out of their way and put in more time to help you settle in, so make sure you show your appreciation for their efforts. A quick “thank you” email or buying them a coffee can go a long way.

Be a Sponge

With so much new information being thrown your way, it’s easy to forget things. Having a notebook and jotting things down can be a huge help. Listen carefully to everything your manager and co-workers are telling you. This will help you avoid having to ask people too many questions in the weeks that follow.

Do your best to make the most of your first week on the job. Expect some challenges, but also expect opportunities to arise. You can meet both head on when you are prepared.
