It’s easy to get complacent in your career. Many of us do in finance. You have a good job, make decent money, and you are in a groove. Work has become somewhat easy and you are comfortable in your work environment. But even though things are going well now doesn’t mean they can’t get better. Maybe it’s time to make a move before you get caught in a rut or have fewer opportunities. As they say, strike while the iron is hot.

Here are 4 signs that it may be time for you to take the next step in your finance career:

You’ve been in the same job for a long time

Time in job

Staying in the same job for a long time is a sure-fire sign that it’s time to make a move, or start looking at the very least. Even if you are happy where you are, it’s never a bad thing to explore your options. If you want to learn and grow in your career, spending more than 3 years in a row in the same position could halt your progress.

You are getting passed over

If other people around you are moving up, then it’s time for you to inquire as well. See which opportunities are available internally, and if you feel as though you are getting overlooked, start to look externally for opportunities. You can’t just sit still and expect opportunities to fall in your lap, especially in a competitive industry like finance and accounting.

Your new job isn’t what you thought it would be

This happens a lot. Finance professionals find a new job, it looks like a great fit, but once you get into the role, it doesn’t turn out to be what you thought. However, this doesn’t mean that you should sit tight. Talk with the hiring manager about the situation. If things don’t look promising, start to formulate plan B.

Financial reasons

Money

Everyone needs to make a good living, and it’s perfectly okay to desire to make more money. If your current employer is not willing to pony up or you are making less than the industry average, start looking for a company that is willing to pay you adequately for your services.
