Hiring full-time permanent employees is not always the best option. All companies have peak times and slower times. But your business needs to run effectively all year.  There are many industries where seasonal or short term recruiting makes the most sense. Retail is the perfect example of this during the holiday season. Accounting firms during tax time is another good example.

Hiring to fill a gap for the short term will change your approach to recruiting somewhat. Here are some useful tips to help you hire effectively for the short term:

1. Be Clear With Employment Terms

short term hiring

If you are hiring an employee for a short period of time, or on a contractor or project basis, make it clear how long the employment term will last. Don’t lead the employee on and promise the potential for full-time work if you know that’s not an option.

2. Be Open to Hiring the Right Person Full Time

On the other hand, you need to be open to recruiting someone full time if the right candidate comes along. One of the benefits of short term hiring is it serves as an extended job interview. You get to see how new hires perform in the job. If they are a great fit, hiring them full time can benefit your company. If you find great talent, don’t let them go.

3. Develop a Short Term Hiring Strategy

If you hire employees for short term roles annually, then it makes sense to develop a recruiting process for these types of candidates. Define your timelines, candidate profiles, and start the hiring process early. Having a strategy will make it easier for you to start recruiting and interviewing candidates when the time comes.

4. Use Your Existing Recruiting Channels

Leverage your current recruiting process and resources to look for candidates. Use the company’s website, social media channels, and leverage your current employees to get referrals.

5. Choose the Right Classification

How you classify short term employees is important. Will they be full time or part-time employees? Will you hire them on a contract or freelance basis? Consider all options and choose the classification that makes the most sense for your business type.
