Provide strategic and operational leadership to MODC’s overall marketing and communications, including a major initiative to revitalize the brand
Lead, manage and develop a high-performing marketing and communications

Nature and Scope of Job

The National Director, Marketing and Communications will play a leadership role in the design and delivery of marketing and communications strategies that will advance March of Dimes Canada’s strategic objectives and enhance its reputation and influence as a progressive, high-impact leader within the disability sector.

The incumbent will bring senior-level experience in marketing and communications, spanning a range of areas. In order to play a leadership role in a major initiative to revitalize MODC’s brand, they will have demonstrated experience in market research; brand strategy and positioning; creative development, and brand application across different platforms, materials and touchpoints. They will also be experienced in the design and execution of innovative digital marketing and content strategies, including website development, email marketing, social media, SEO and SEM. Complimenting these strengths will be excellent writing skills and a strong generalist skill set, enabling them to effectively direct integrated marketing campaigns and oversee the corporate communications function.

An experienced manager and coach, the incumbent will lead the day-to-day operations of the marketing and communications team as it delivers on departmental priorities and supports internal customers. Serving as a senior business partner and trusted advisor, they will develop a nuanced understanding of the organization’s different business units; design strategies to meet identified needs and goals; and oversee delivery. With this in mind, strong project and relationship management skills and the ability to balance multiple priorities will be key success factors for the role.

  1. will engage and collaborate with stakeholders and subject matter experts across the organization, taking an integrated approach to projects where required. They will also serve as a member of the organization’s Senior Management Team.



Marketing and Communications

  • Lead the provision of strategic marketing and communications support for the organization’s programs, projects and business development efforts in order to inform, influence and engage key stakeholders and targeted audiences
  • Oversee the modernization of MODC’s digital marketing strategies and activities across various channels, with a focus on website development, email marketing, social media and performance marketing
  • Develop, deliver and continually optimize content marketing strategies to achieve identified business objectives
  • Direct the planning, delivery and evaluation of key corporate communications activities, including corporate publications, executive communications, internal communications and events.
  • Lead proactive and media relations efforts, seeking opportunities to position MODC as a thought leader within the disability space
  • Lead issues management and crisis communications
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of an annual marketing and communications calendar to sequence and manage external promotions
  • Work closely with internal business leads to assess and establish interdepartmental planning and collaboration processes, develop strategies and work plans, and measure effectiveness and impact of support delivered


  • Lead a major strategic initiative to revitalize MODC’s brand, working in partnership with a cross-functional steering committee
  • Design and deliver qualitative and quantitative market research and analysis, covering the general public and targeted stakeholder segments
  • Develop recommendations for MODC’s future brand strategy, as well as a multi-year brand transformation roadmap outlining the process, timelines and budget for delivery
  • Develop and refine the organization’s brand voice, story and core messages, establishing a clear, compelling and consistent style across all MODC’s communications and content
  • Lead brand transformation activities, including brand positioning, identity and graphic standards development, and application across key digital platforms, marketing collateral, signage and other touchpoints
  • Lead agency and vendor procurement and manage relationships to deliver contracted requirements
  • Direct change management and engagement efforts with key audiences including organizational governance, executive and senior management, staff, volunteers and external stakeholders.


  • Recruit, manage, coach and lead all direct reports, performing all necessary human resources management activities
  • Establish a culture of continuous learning and development within the team, engaging formal and informal learning opportunities
  • Prepare departmental operational plans and goals
  • Prepare and manage departmental budget
  • Participate as a member of the Senior Management Team, sharing information about departmental operations and participating in initiatives and projects to increase cross-functional alignment and overall organizational performance

Qualifications and Experience


Post-secondary diploma in marketing or communications, or related marketing designation and equivalent job experience


A minimum 10 years’ related progressive marketing and experience, with at least three years at a senior level
Significant management experience with a proven ability to inspire and guide a team toward the achievement of challenging goals
Experience in brand strategy and implementation, ideally including corporate rebranding
Experience spanning traditional and digital marketing and communications, including strategy development, tactical execution, goal setting and measurement
Experience in successfully developing and implementing marketing and communications plans in complex organizations with multiple stakeholders
Experience in guiding and counselling internal business leads on marketing and communications issues
Experience in establishing and ensuring adherence to accessibility standards for people with disabilities will be an asset
Agency experience will be an asset

Knowledge/skill required

Superior written and verbal communications, including presentation skills
Agile, efficient and disciplined in managing multiple complex projects simultaneously to produce valued outcomes
Strong leadership, team-building, coaching and interpersonal skills
Excellent collaboration skills with internal business leads and senior leaders, in direct and respectful ways
Ability to handle highly confidential material with discretion and difficult situations with diplomacy, sensitivity and tact.
Fluency in French will be an asset
