Are we starting to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel? People are getting vaccinated, and companies are making plans for the post-pandemic workplace. One area in particular that will see unique changes is how human resources will operate. With the emergence of the hybrid workplace and greater reliance on digital technology and automation, HR is shifting.

Here we are going to look at the top post-pandemic workplace HR trends for 2021 and beyond:

1. Human Resources Will Become the New IT

The recruiting industry as a whole is seeing the shift to a hybrid workplace where there is greater reliance on technology and HR is smack dab in the middle. RBC Thought Leadership has identified a number of trends that are signaling a blend of HR and IT:

  • The hybrid work model is becoming the norm: 22% of office employees expect to work from home. 81% will return to the office within 4 months if they can work remotely part-time.
  • Collaboration tools are used more than ever: 3 in 5 employers are planning to spend more on collaboration tools.
  • Mental health is a big concern: 74% of workers believe poor mental health is affecting their productivity.
  • Companies will need to embed technology into how they manage talent: Video and collaboration tools are becoming an embedded part of the recruiting process.
  • How performance is managed is changing: Workers are seeking more autonomy and employers are starting to focus more on outputs.
  • Office space re-designs: We could see COVID testing and workplace contact tracing. Expect companies to change physical spaces and programs to meet the expectations of the post-pandemic workspace.

2. Expanded Data Collection

Many companies were forced into a digital transformation and many others performed major upgrades. With data collection and analytics becoming increasingly important for business strategies, look for HR to play a role in ethical best practices related to the collection of information.

3. Employee Monitoring

A major cause for concern among employers was the ability to monitor employees when they are working from home. Many companies upped their use of monitoring tools during the pandemic, and many employees fought back against this. Look for HR to be a driving force in establishing new regulations in this area.

4. Recruiting Candidates With Diversified Skill Sets

Traditional job roles are changing. So are the skill sets employers require to fill these new types of roles. Expect HR to play a key role in helping to develop these new job descriptions and assess which skills are required to create a more agile workplace.
