newly created Director of eDiscovery role to lead and oversee its eDiscovery department, setting the strategic direction for electronic discovery operations across the organization.
Role Overview
The Director of eDiscovery will oversee the eDiscovery department, managing a team of eDiscovery Analysts, eDiscovery Reviewers, eDiscovery Counsel, and an eDiscovery Project Manager to ensure consistent delivery of high-quality work product across all matters.
This individual will serve as the primary point of contact for senior leadership, clients, and outside counsel on eDiscovery strategy and will be responsible for developing and implementing departmental policies, workflows, and technology solutions.
The role oversees the full eDiscovery lifecycle, from legal hold and preservation through collection, processing, review, and production, ensuring accuracy, defensibility, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities - Provide strategic leadership and oversight of the eDiscovery department, including people, processes, and technology
- Directly manage and mentor eDiscovery Analysts, Reviewers, Counsel, and the eDiscovery Project Manager
- Establish departmental goals, performance metrics, and conduct performance evaluations
- Develop and implement eDiscovery policies, standard operating procedures, and best practices
- Advise senior leadership, clients, and legal teams on eDiscovery strategy, risk mitigation, and cost management
- Oversee departmental budgets, resource allocation, and vendor relationships
- Manage the end-to-end eDiscovery lifecycle across matters
- Evaluate, select, and manage eDiscovery platforms and technologies, including Relativity
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders, outside counsel, clients, and third-party vendors
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments affecting eDiscovery obligations and adapt practices accordingly
- Oversee quality control processes to ensure compliance with applicable rules and court orders
- Manage escalations and resolve complex project issues
- Review and approve project plans, budgets, and estimates
- Foster a collaborative team environment and support professional development
Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (J.D. or Master’s) or relevant certifications (RCA, CEDS, PMP) preferred
- Minimum 8 years of progressive eDiscovery or litigation support experience, including at least 3 years in leadership
- Demonstrated experience managing and developing teams, including hiring, training, and performance management
- Expert knowledge of the eDiscovery lifecycle and Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM)
- Extensive experience with Relativity and other industry-standard eDiscovery platforms
- Strong understanding of legal procedures, civil procedure rules, and data privacy regulations related to eDiscovery
- Experience managing budgets, vendor contracts, and resource planning
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills
- Professional presence with the ability to build strong relationships across all levels, including senior executives, clients, and outside counsel
- Flexibility to work outside regular business hours when needed to meet client or departmental needs
