We are representing a
video game development studio seeking an experienced
Environmental Artist to create rich, immersive worlds for an exciting game project.
This role is responsible for building high-quality environments, including natural landscapes, organic detailing, biome set dressing, foliage generation, cliff placement, and detailed points of interest that align with the artistic vision and gameplay requirements. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Level Designers, Technical Artists, and the broader art team to create visually compelling, performant environments that support engaging player experiences.
Key Responsibilities - Create high-quality 3D environments, including terrain, foliage, cliffs, organic props, and world assets
- Assemble and dress biomes and points of interest using available assets and kits
- Collaborate with Level Designers to support gameplay flow, readability, and player navigation
- Work with Technical Artists to ensure assets meet performance budgets and technical requirements
- Create and apply materials, shaders, and textures that align with the project's visual style
- Optimize assets and environments for performance across target platforms
- Participate in art reviews and iterate on feedback from Art Direction and team members
- Maintain consistency with established art styles, production pipelines, and workflows
- Contribute to documentation and help refine environment art pipelines and best practices
Qualifications - Proven experience as an Environment Artist with a strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality work, particularly realistic organic environments
- Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as Blender, Maya, and Substance Painter/Designer
- Experience working in Unreal Engine 5
- Strong understanding of composition, lighting, and environmental storytelling
- Ability to create realistic natural environments, with experience in man-made environments considered an asset
- Experience optimizing environments for performance, including LOD creation, draw calls, and memory budgets
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
Preferred Qualifications - Experience developing open-world or large-scale environments
- Knowledge of terrain tools, foliage systems, and world-building workflows
- Familiarity with procedural tools, including PCG, procedural foliage generation, Houdini, and world generation pipelines
- Understanding of ISM, HISM, and built-in harvesting tools, including appropriate use cases
- Knowledge of PBR workflows and shader systems
- Experience working on multiplayer or live-service games
- Five or more years of relevant industry experience preferred
- Experience contributing to shipped live-service titles is considered an asset
