We are looking for an experienced Controller for a new role with our client, an established Toronto-based law firm.
Responsibilities Financial Reporting:
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
- Utilize the firm's accounting program, PCLaw, to prepare weekly and monthly reports, including month and year-end reports.
- Complete the LSO Annual Report for all lawyers.
- Prepare daily cash flow reports for the managing partner.
Budgeting and Financial Planning:
- Assist in the preparation of the annual budget, monitor budget variances, and report significant discrepancies to management.
- Develop financial forecasts and projections to support strategic planning and decision-making.
- Conduct financial analysis to provide insights and recommendations for cost control and efficiency improvements.
Accounting Operations:
- Manage disbursements, billings, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable.
- Handle all entries, adjusting entries, and reconciliations on a monthly and annual basis.
- Reconcile all Trust and general accounts, ensuring compliance with LSO rules.
- Prepare and post bank deposits.
- Allocate expenses to appropriate accounts.
- Maintain a fixed assets register and determine if purchases should be considered fixed assets.
- Prepare monthly management companies’ invoices.
- Calculate, file, and pay HST for the partnership and management companies.
- Set up new hires in the ADP payroll system and reconcile payroll.
- Reconcile and file EHT at the end of the year.
- Reconcile T4s.
Internal Controls and Compliance:
- Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure the integrity of financial records.
- Coordinate with external auditors during financial audits and ensure timely resolution of audit findings.
- Manage LawPro Professional Liability Insurance matters and transaction levies.
- Maintain all benefits programs.
- Calculate bonuses and compensation for lawyers.
- Maintain Equitrac.
- Review all bank accounts online daily.
Training and Support:
- Train staff on PCLaw.
- Open new files in PCLaw.
- Liaise with the firm's bank and external Accountants
- Perform other day-to-day duties as required.
Qualifications - Strong knowledge of accounting principles and procedures.
- Proficiency in accounting softwares, the firm works in PCLaw.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
