The Royal Ontario Museum is recruiting a new Chief Facilities Officer, Capital Development and Facilities. The Chief Facilities Officer is a member of the ROM's senior management team, and plays a key role in preserving, developing, and continuously improving the physical facilities and infrastructure of three major buildings that encompass approximately 800,000 square feet.
Reporting to the Deputy Director for Museum Operations and Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Chief Facilities Officer will play a key role in ROM's future programmatic growth and success by providing both strategic and tactical leadership in support of the development and maintenance of the Museum's facilities and operations and major capital infrastructure initiatives.
The Museum seeks a flexible, collaborative, transparent, and responsive leader to manage the growing needs of an emerging, dynamic, and vibrant institution. The successful candidate will be a mission-driven professional with a strong appreciation for museums, cultural heritage, and public service. The position's performance expectations include the ability to:
- Develop a multi-year capital plan to ensure that the building infrastructure and associated systems are maintained in the best possible condition.
- Develop multi-year maintenance plan to ensure that the quality of the visitor experience is at the highest level.
- Manage major capital initiatives from conception to completion and ongoing asset management.
- Establish credibility with his or her peers within the facilities and operations function as well as curators, scholars, and others at the Museum and with external relations and provincial partners.
The ideal candidate will possess a broad and strong track record in facilities operations and design and construction management. They will be organized, technically strong, and a credible, empathetic leader. To be successful, the person must be flexible, responsive, and collaborative manager, who is an excellent problem solver and exhibits a proactive and transparent style.
Possessing a sense of urgency, the person must demonstrate an ability to work within a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment. The person must also be fiscally responsible in managing resources and finances.
Strategic in nature, the ideal candidate will have excellent skills in building relationships, communicating effectively, and serving the needs of others. The person must be articulate, committed, and an excellent listener. Most importantly, the ideal candidate will need to be responsive and results-oriented to complete the activities.
This is fundamentally a "full-range" leadership role: the successful candidate will be equally credible on the loading dock and in the boardroom. They need to be approachable and trusted by housekeeping and security staff (a workforce of 60+), while also being polished enough to work strategically with the CEO, board, and major donors. The role demands someone who genuinely thrives on the ground, not an executive who manages from behind a desk. They should take visible pride in the building, and bring energy to both the operational grind of day-to-day facilities management, as well as the high-profile moments where the museum shines as a world-class cultural institution.
