Finance and accounting, like many other industries across the country, tend to slow down during the summer months. People are working fewer hours, they are on vacation, and people are in a little bit less of a hurry to get things done.
“As the weather gets warmer, the office gets quieter and the world moves at a more relaxed tempo. But that doesn’t mean you have to slow down your career advancement,” says Forbes.
Even though everyone else may be taking things easy and relaxing during this traditionally slower time of the year, there are still many things you can do to boost your career.
The summer is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of slower times and further yourself. Here are some ways to improve professionally:
1. Pick up a new skill or two: With things a little more relaxed around the office, and with some vacation days to burn, why not put the extra time to good use by learning a new skill or two? With finance and technology continuously coming together, there are many new skills that you can add to your repertoire that will benefit you now and in the future.
2. Informal networking: Use those beautiful summer days to catch up with colleagues and connections. Rather than meet up in the office, why not spend a few hours at a patio for lunch to catch up in a less formal setting? Use the time to brainstorm and talk about new opportunities.
3. Reassess your career plans: With less on your plate during the summer, it’s the perfect time to review your career plan, assess where you are, where you want to go, and the steps required to achieve your career goals. It’s important to review your career plans on a regular basis, and the summer is a great time to do it.
4. Recharge to re-motivate: The summer is also an opportunity to recharge your battery. A little downtime can do wonders for your career and motivation. Take the time to take a step back and then dive back in with a fresh mind and fresh perspective.
