Look at almost any job description today, and you will see a massive list of requirements. Many job seekers review these lists and opt out if they miss even a single qualification.

All top recruitment agencies in Toronto will tell you the odds of a candidate meeting every single requirement are incredibly small.

In fact, if you check every single box, there is a strong chance you are actually overqualified for the role. Employers want room for you to grow; if you can already do 100% of the job on day one, you will likely get bored quickly.

Why You Should Apply Anyway

You absolutely should apply, even if your profile doesn’t match perfectly.

  • Job descriptions are wish lists: Employers write postings to describe their absolute dream candidate. They rarely expect to find someone who possesses every single trait on that list.
  • Skills are transferable: A good hiring manager values core competencies, like problem-solving, resilience, and leadership, just as much as a specific software or IT credential.
  • The market values potential: Companies are increasingly shifting toward skills-based hiring. They want people who have the capacity to adapt and learn.

How Do I Know When To Apply? Use the 60-70% Rule

So, what is the baseline? How do you know if your application is worth the effort?

As a general rule of thumb, I strongly encourage applying if you meet at least 60% to 70% of the core qualifications.

When assessing your fit, divide the job description into two categories:

  • Core competencies: These are the foundational skills required to handle the daily responsibilities of the role. If the job requires managing a team and you have years of leadership experience, you hit the core.
  • “Nice-to-haves”: These are often listed as preferred certifications, specific secondary tools, or a precise number of years in a niche sector. These are highly negotiable.

If you possess the core capabilities and have a proven track record of delivering results, the missing pieces can usually be learned on the job.

When to Skip the Application

While pushing your boundaries is smart, you also need to protect your time. There are clear signs that a role is not the right fit:

  • Missing hard prerequisites: If a position requires a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation and you do not have it, your application will be filtered out immediately.
  • Massive seniority gaps: If you are at a coordinator level and apply for a Vice President role, the gap is simply too wide to bridge through transferable skills.
  • Complete lack of industry context: While cross-industry hiring happens, senior roles usually require a fundamental understanding of the specific market dynamics.

How to Position Your Application

When you apply without meeting every requirement, your resume needs to address the gap proactively.

Do not apologize for what you lack. Instead, use your cover letter and resume to highlight your adaptability. Focus on your achievements, your alignment with corporate values, and your ability to master new challenges quickly.

The job market moves fast. Don’t disqualify yourself before the hiring manager even gets a chance to look at your track record.
