Thinking about making a career move? Timing can make all the difference. It can affect how many jobs are available and the number of candidates applying for roles.

Some professionals say January is best, when new budgets and hiring plans kick in. Others think summer or fall are ideal, when projects ramp up and opportunities open. But what do you think? Our HR recruiters put this question to the test.

Poll: More candidates are moving jobs during the fall and winter months

Almost half of the candidates move during the fall, and well over half move during the cool season. Our recent LinkedIn poll found that 45% of candidates move in the fall. The second most popular season for movement was the New Year. Spring and summer were the quietest months for job movement. See the complete results here:

Why do more candidates move in the fall and winter?

While spring and summer are often viewed as the peak seasons for hiring and relocation, many professionals actually make career changes in the latter half of the year. Fall and winter are becoming increasingly active periods for job movement, and there are several reasons why:

1. Performance Reviews Spark Change

Most companies conduct annual performance reviews toward the end of the year or at the start of the new year. During this time, employees tend to reassess their career growth and decide whether their current employer is still the right fit.

2. Budget Resets Create New Hiring Opportunities

As organizations plan for the upcoming year, they approve new positions, finalize investments, and expand recruitment efforts. This results in more high-quality job openings late in the year.

3. Less Competition from Other Applicants

The perception that fall and winter are slower months can result is fewer applicants during this time, giving you a better opportunity to secure job interviews.

4. Life Milestones Drive Career Reassessment

The back-to-school season, the holiday slowdown, and New Year’s resolutions all prompt people to reflect on priorities, including career satisfaction, mental well-being, and job flexibility.

5. Organizations Push to Fill Roles Before Year-End

Hiring managers want teams fully staffed for the new year. This urgency can speed up decision-making and improve candidate experience — a major advantage for job seekers.

A final word about when to hire candidates

There is no question that companies tend to ramp up hiring in the fall and the new year, however, making a move should be less about a season and more about the perfect opportunity. Make a move when the time is best for your career.
