Recruiter-Proof Your Business: Give Feedback

October 30th, 2015

“I’ve lost four employees to you headhunters in three months.  None of them would have left if a headhunter hadn’t lured them away!”

As headhunters, we hear this a lot.  The reality is,Recruiter-Proof Your Business there just isn’t enough A+ talent to go around, so they will always be in demand… and headhunters will always call.  Since IQ PARTNERS is committed to helping our clients hire better, hire less, and retain more, we created a seven step guide to recruiter-proof your business using research and first-hand interviews with top companies like Google, Deloitte, LoyaltyOne, TD Bank, and Achievers.

Each month we’ll share a little from each of the seven steps.  This month: why it’s important to clarify job expectations and provide feedback continuously if you want to keep your top employees engaged!  Click here to download the guide now, or read on for a teaser from step three.

Clarify Expectations (Give Feedback)

The Brutal Facts

  • 61% of managers claim they meet each person they manage at least 2x per month – only 24% of employees say they meet that frequently.
  • 75% of managers always/sometimes discuss employee career development – only 38% of employees agree.
  • +90% of managers sometimes/always coach employees – only 40% of employees agree.
(CIPD study reported in HR Magazine)

A major area where employee engagement can break down is in unclear job expectations, particularly in how success will be measured and what the feedback loop is.  In step 3 we discuss how to improve the feedback loop (hint: annual performance appraisals are NOT the answer) and how regular feedback can help you not only keep your top employees from leaving but also improve your corporate ROI.

We also provide examples of successful growth companies employing these strategies, like Adobe Systems – they replaced annual reviews with frequent “check-ins”, where managers provide coaching and advice when it’s needed rather than months after teachable moments have passed. Voluntary attrition has dropped 30% since “check-ins” were introduced.  Alternatively, failure to provide continuous, real-time feedback can lead to a disengaged workforce and high levels of attrition.
